Counseling, also known as therapy or psychotherapy, is an evidence-based approach to helping individuals increase their emotional well-being and experience greater flourishing in daily life through improved mood, thoughts, and behaviors. Through a therapeutic relationship with a licensed behavioral health provider, individuals can identify their personal goals and work towards developing skills, finding solutions to problems, and working towards resolving and repairing past hurts.

In individual counseling, a therapist offers supportive, nonjudgmental, confidential, unbiased, and compassionate care to a single person. While every therapist has their own expertise and specialized training, all therapists at Blue River Counseling use evidence-based treatment modalities to help their clients reach their goals and find relief. You can come into this private inviting space in person or online to reflect, process, share, or resolve whatever is on your mind. Individual counseling is covered by most insurance plans when the individual qualifies for a mental health diagnosis and is deemed medically necessary.

Couples counseling, sometimes known as couples therapy or marriage counseling, is a form of psychotherapy designed to help strengthen a relationship and resolve conflicts. Couples counseling is beneficial for partners in all types of relationships, whether you’re dating, engaged, married, or in a long-term partnership (be that monogamous or polyamorous). It can be especially helpful for:

  • Couples experiencing frequent arguments or misunderstandings

  • Partners feeling disconnected or distant from each other

  • Those navigating major life changes or transitions

  • Couples seeking to rebuild trust after infidelity or betrayal

  • Partners wanting to improve their relationship dynamics and satisfaction

Premarital counseling is a specific type of couples counseling to help couples identify the strengths and limitations of their relationship and work towards healthier relational dynamics before marriage. PREPARE/ENRICH is a reputable and highly-researched program designed to assist couples in assessing and working through core relational dynamics that frequently impact healthy relationships. After conducting an in-depth assessment of both partners, the therapist works towards identifying areas of growth in the relationship and helping couples build skills to address differences. The full process of PREPARE/ENRICH looks different from couple to couple, but certain core subjects are covered for all couples. These include:

  • Communication

  • Conflict resolution

  • Relationship roles and expectations

  • Lifestyle and habits

  • Financial management

  • Sex and affection

  • Family and friends

  • Spiritual beliefs

  • Differences in partner’s personalities

  • Stress management

Family counseling, also known as family therapy, is a specialized form of therapy designed to address and resolve issues within family dynamics. It provides a safe, neutral space where family members can come together to explore, understand, and improve communication, resolve conflicts, strengthen relationships, manage behavioral issues, and receive support during growth and transitions.

Couples counseling and family counseling are not covered by most insurance plans unless one individual is willing to be diagnosed with a mental health condition and the counseling is deemed as medically necessary for the resolution of that diagnosis. For this reason, Blue River Counseling & Wellness only offers couples and family counseling at a self-pay rate. For more information about the costs of counseling, please see our Fees & Insurance page.

Have you tried weekly therapy and found that it just wasn’t getting you the results you had hoped for? While weekly talk therapy can offer strategies for coping, better symptom management, and improvement in well-being, there is often not enough time to work on trauma resolution, even when methods like EMDR or brainspotting are used. With our intensive trauma therapy model, healing work does not need to take months or years; depending on your situation, it can often be done more quickly and with more resolution of symptoms.

Using Robin Shapiro, Dr. Laura Parnell, Dr. Linda Gantt, and Dr. Janina Fisher’s trauma therapy models, each therapy intensive will be geared towards meeting each individual's specific needs and profiles. Therapy intensives can range from as short as 4 hours, to as long as 10 days. All options for trauma therapy intensives

Coaching is a collaborative process designed to help individuals reach a specific personal or professional goal, enhance their performance, and unlock their potential. Whereas individual counseling often focuses on the past, coaching focuses on setting and reaching future-oriented objectives through guided exploration, actionable strategies, and accountability. Insurance companies do not deem coaching medically necessary and therefore not covered by insurance. For more information about coaching costs, please see our Fees & Insurance page.

Blue River Counseling & Wellness offers all different kinds of group work opportunities throughout the year. These include.

Group Therapy: Sometimes known as a therapeutic group or a support group, group therapy is where individuals meet regularly with a trained therapist to discuss and explore their experiences, emotions, and skills related to a shared mental health issue or personal goal. Group therapy is beneficial for many people as it helps them build community support through shared experiences, the opportunity to hear different viewpoints and diverse perspectives, and to work on skills in a larger group setting. Additionally, group therapy tends to be more affordable than ongoing individual therapy.

Book Groups: Book groups are groups that meet to read and discuss a book focused on wellness and personal growth together.
